11.4 Gender differences in management styles

I have worked for both female bosses and male bosses, and I have to say so far working for a male boss has been a much better experience. Being a female myself, I hate to feel this way, but it seems to be true. I have talked to many of my friends about this and they all agree. It seems that female managers are more controlling and there's more politics involved. With the male boss, everything was little more relaxed and open. My reasoning for this is that in male dominated organizations, women sometimes feel the need to try and "show their power & authority" by micro-managing. Although I completely understand that this could just be my experience and that this doesn't apply to everyone.

I can see how a female manager might want to compete more than a male manager but I must admit that my experience over the last couple of years has showed me that it is not the gender that is important but how secure the manager is. The more secure the person the better the manager. She or he won't feel so attacked all the time and would always be more relaxed. If someone feels insecure or threatened then the behavior is more controlling, micromanaging and unpleasant. The other difficult realization is that not many managers feel secure and that's too bad.

I agree with your assessment about female managers, and I'm a male!

The reason that female managers are difficult to work for is that they think they need to prove their managerial skill by asserting their authority even when it is not required. The females who are promoted to managerial status probably think that since there are fewer female managers at their level, they have to strive harder to prove their merit.

I too find that male managers are far more lenient in dealing with their employees compared to female managers. It is like male managers just manage their employees, but female managers go further and make sure that the employee knows he or she is being managed by an able manager.
